Online Services

In light of the currently evolving COVID-19 (Coronavirus) situation in the UK, we have suspended our online appointment booking system.  Prescriptions can still be ordered via our online service.

You can now order your medication and make GP appointments online using Patient Services.  To register for this, please contact Portree Medical Centre where you will be asked to provide an email address.  A form with registration details will then be given to you and you should use this to complete the registration process on the Patient Services website.

The NHS is Open

Whilst we appreciate all people are doing to help the NHS during this time, it’s vital those with non-coronavirus health concerns still seek help as they would have before the outbreak.

The NHS is here for you, so don’t ignore the warning signs.  You are not being a burden, you are looking after yourself and our NHS by doing so.

If you notice a deterioration in your health or someone in your household, call your GP in normal hours, 111 out of hours, or in an emergency dial 999.

Your community pharmacy and your GP are open, please contact them for advice or with concerns.

If you are concerned about a potential sign or symptom of cancer contact your GP practice to get checked.

If you or your child has an immunisation appointment, make sure you attend, or reschedule if you’re showing symptoms of COVID-19.

If you have a regular appointment for a chronic condition such as asthma or diabetes you should contact your GP and they will advise you. If your hospital appointment has not been cancelled you should still attend.

COVID-19 patients and those displaying symptoms are treated separately.

Cancer
•    Don’t delay in getting potential cancer signs and symptoms checked during COVID-19 your GP practice is still here for you.
•    It’s probably nothing serious, but it’s best to get checked, as the earlier cancer is found the easier it is to treat.
•    Information on the common signs and symptoms of cancer can be found at www.getcheckedearly.org.
•    NHS screening services for breast, bowel and cervical cancer have been paused during COVID-19 but if you’ve noticed symptoms and are concerned, your GP practice is open and ready to help.  Getting checked early is one of the main reasons why more people are surviving cancer.

•    Immunisations for pregnant women and young children are continuing during this time, as they are an important part of helping protect against serious, preventable diseases.  
•    The NHS is still here for you - don’t miss your appointment, or call to rearrange if you or your child are showing signs of COVID-19.

Fast deteriorating conditions
•    If you or anyone in your household notices a rapid deterioration in their health, seek help immediately.
•    Don’t ignore the early warning signs of serious conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, severe asthma, or diabetic collapse.  
•    The NHS is still here for you.  Call 999 for an emergency or your GP in normal hours and 111 for out of hours support.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) - Informative Notice to Patients

In light of the currently evolving COVID-19 (Coronavirus) situation in the UK, Portree Medical Centre is taking some preventative measures to help protect our community; in order to minimise the spread of the virus, we will be encouraging patients to engage in telephone consultations for the time being, rather than attending the surgery for ‘face-to-face’ appointments.  If the clinician then decides that it is necessary for you to be seen in clinic, this will be arranged for you.

We also request that any patients who are experiencing cough, fever, cold or flu symptoms do not attend the surgery, even if the symptoms are mild.  Our reception/admin team will be screening any patients arriving to the surgery for the above symptoms, and may advise that a face-to-face appointment with a clinician will only be arranged after telephone triage.  We will be suspending appointments at the Staffin GP clinic and the Online Appointment Booking service for the time being.

We would ask that everyone understands and appreciates our reasons for implementing the above measures; we have the best interests of our entire community in mind and are keen to minimise the risk of infection to as many patients as possible.

We can now offer video consultations with some of our clinicians.  More information can be found on our GP Near Me - Video Consultations page.  Video consultations can only be attended after arranging this with the practice at a specified appointment time.

High Risk Patients

The UK government have issued guidance on social distancing for everyone in the UK: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-guidance-on-social-distancing-and-for-vulnerable-people/guidance-on-social-distancing-for-everyone-in-the-uk-and-protecting-older-people-and-vulnerable-adults.

People who are considered to be at high risk should follow the advice from the government on social distancing and that they take steps to reduce their social interactions in order to reduce the transmission of coronavirus.

There will be people who fall into the highest risk category and they will receive a letter from the Chief Medical Officer with advice on how to protect themselves and access the care and treatment they need during this time.  The original letter (dated 31 March 2020) has been linked below. The surgery will be in contact with these patients to discuss the letter.  The Scottish Government will also be sending out a update on keeping safe by letter to those who have received a shielding letter, and we have also added a copy below.

Help and Support

Skye Community Response collaborates with volunteers and groups island-wide.  They take calls from the public and direct them to the relevant information, organisations or volunteers that can assist them.  They offer support for coronavirus information, food and prescription delivery, IT support, fuel delivery, local area groups, post/mail support, business support, accommodation support, essential household repair support, and mental health support.

They are available 7 days a week, between 9am and 5pm.

SLCVO (Skye and Lochalsh Council for Voluntary Organisations) Community Calls is a regular, friendly check-in call service for adults across Skye, Lochalsh and Wester Ross.  The service aims to make people feel safe, reassured and not alone by connecting people to a community of volunteers.  The volunteers make regular calls to check an individual’s well-being, signpost people to essential support services such as local community hubs and shop delivery services, initiate an emergency check-up response for those who do not answer calls, recognise problems or concerns of individuals and find ways to alleviate these, and identify gaps or barriers to support in communities and work with local groups and statutory organisations to overcome these.

Helpline for Vulnerable People

A helpline has been setup for those at increased risk who don’t have a support network, such as family or existing community support. It can also be used by those in the shielding group who can’t get online and haven’t received a letter yet. The helpline number is 0800 111 4000.

Callers will be connected to their local authority who will help them access the services they need, including:

  • essential food and medication
  • links to local social work services for vulnerable children or adults
  • emotional support
  • contact with local volunteer groups

The helpline is open from 9.00am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday.

Ranitidine - Supply Issues

There are considerable current supply issues with regard to the medication ranitidine.

Ranitidine – a medication that helps with indigestion –  is likely to remain unavailable for at least the next 3 months.

If you find that you are struggling significantly whilst the medication is unavailable, please contact the Medical Centre and ask for a message to be passed to your usual doctor; your GP will endeavour to arrange a supply of an alternative medication.

Please note: this is a national supply issue and is outwith both our and Boots control.

Physiotherapy at Portree Medical Centre

We now have physiotherapy clinics at the surgery.  Mairi Gillies, the First Contact Physiotherapist, holds clinics every Wednesday and Friday and you can book an appointment by contacting Portree Medical Centre directly.  For more information on this service, please look at our physiotherapy information page.
